Thursday Think Tank: Random Acts of Art!

One of my colleagues, my partner in crafty-crime, and blogger bee Andrea Keller(find her blog here) showed me an awesome article about Random Acts of Art! So I wanted to try this out with my 1st graders and put a little bit of a technology twist with it.

Step one: Create a small piece of art that can be placed anywhere. We also add a little bit of an explanation on the back.

Step two: Place it somewhere a person can find it randomly and enjoy it!

Step 3: Hopefully they'll take a picture of it and put it on instagram with the hashtag #elliottRAA and tag @TheArtStudioatElliott which is our official Art Studio instagram! (click and follow us for updates on what we're doing!)

The kids have been really excited and we even went on a "secret mission" to deposit our RAA in the library for someone to find!

Want to join in on the fun? Here is what the process looks like, its simple and easy anyone can do it!

The note says: Surprise! I'm a RANDOM ACT OF ART! Put me on instagram with the hashtag #elliottRAA and tag @TheArtStudioatElliott

This would also be a great idea to teach kids about internet safety and how fast an image travels around. Note: children were instructed not to put any identifying names or marks on these random acts of art to keep us safe. :)

I can't wait to see where the kids put these and if people find them! Try it out and tell me about your experience!

  1. Did this back in college and totally forgot about it! Thanks for sharing, I'll be doing this real soon. Can ask, did you put them just in school or in the community as well?

    1. The kids and I talked about putting these in many different places, the grocery store, the park, at home etc...I've heard that a few of the students actually just gave them to people which is okay too! Let me know when you try it out again, I'm excited to see this keep spreading!

  2. This is a great idea! I like the tie in with internet safety. I think I will use this next year when our school district has it's internet safety curriculum.(But I may not be able to wait until then!) I think I will also use this at the Spring Art Festival and create a #hashtag for the school so parents can take pictures and we can collect them together in one place! Whee! so many ideas. Thanks. :)

    1. I just posted a blog about our first art event! I wish I would have thought of the hashtag idea for the event, now I'll definitely have to do it next year! Great idea, I can't wait to see what you're up to at the Spring Art Festival! Do you have an instagram for your classroom?

  3. This sounds like a fab idea! It reminds me when my cousins from Indiana visited (they were 6 sisters!) for a family reunion and they left random notes all around the house before they left about how they appreciated their stay with us. It was so sweet, and even a year later after that, I found a note or two from them! Will definitely try something out with the girls. :)

    1. That is such a sweet thing to do! I was just pondering the lost art of letter/note writing the other day and I think we should bring it back! I'm going to start leaving random notes around the place and see what happens. :) Let me know what you do with the girls, I'm sure it'll be loads of fun!
